Reminder: Ancillary Claims Must Be Approved by Supervising Physician
As a reminder to ensure proper processing and avoid denials or rejections, ancillary claims, lab orders, specialty pharmacy prescriptions, and referrals for your BlueCross BlueShield patients must be completed in full by the supervising physician of record. While resident physicians in an instructional format may create lab orders, prescriptions, and referrals, they should not be issuing these under their names.
Supervising physicians of record should continue to review notes and orders on a regular basis to ensure that these orders have the correct documentation. If a resident physician is referring a member for other services, such as physical therapy, the supervising physician must be listed on that referral as the referring physician.
