Maternal & Infant Health Basics

Welcoming a new baby in your life is an exciting and important time. Make sure you and your infant get a healthy start by staying educated and knowing the facts. Many programs are available to help you and your baby through your new journey. Most importantly, make sure you are taking care of yourself. Here are a few self-care tips to get you started:

All women of childbearing age should:

  • See your doctor as soon as you think you're pregnant
  • Keep ALL prenatal care appointments
  • Take your prenatal vitamins as prescribed
  • Eat a well-balanced diet including fruits and vegetables
  • Maintain regular physical activity
  • Check your rubella/measles immunity
  • Be tested for HIV

As an expectant mother, avoid:

  • Alcohol and illicit drugs
  • Saunas, hot tubs, or steam rooms
  • Caffeine
  • X-rays
  • Handling cat litter or eating undercooked meat
  • Tobacco products

Enroll in a Prenatal Class to learn about:

  • Anatomy and physiology of labor and delivery
  • Breathing and relaxation techniques
  • Body conditioning exercises
  • Comfort measures
  • Labor and birth variations
  • Cesarean birth
  • Hospital procedures
  • Medications
  • Patient rights, communication skills
  • Postpartum care, postpartum exercise
  • Rehearsal and practice sessions of these skills
  • Gestational diabetes

Take a breastfeeding class to learn about:

  • Advantages of breastfeeding
  • Positioning
  • Storing breast milk
  • Supplementing and weaning
  • Hints for the working mother
  • Learn more about breast pumps

Programs range from one class to multiple sessions over eight weeks. Many of the prenatal education programs are for both expectant mother and father, or support person.
