Health Coaching

BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York health coaches are trained professionals who will help guide you to better health. Health coaching is a free service, and is completely voluntary for members.

Here's what a health coach can offer you:

  • Support, encouragement, and education
  • Development of goals and plans of action
  • Identify barriers to better health
  • Show you how to manage and control chronic and/or complex conditions
  • Promote safe and healthy lifestyles

Our health coaches provide support and education in several areas, including: 

  • Weight management
  • Exercise
  • Nutrition
  • Stress management
  • Tobacco cessation
  • Sleep apnea
  • Depression
  • Diabetes management

Here are some frequently asked questions to help you better understand health coaching: 

Is a health coach a physician?

No, our health coaches are certified health coaches through the American Council of Exercise. Health coaches are wellness professionals including:

  • Registered nurses
  • Registered dietitians
  • Certified diabetic educators
  • Certified asthma educators
  • Certified holistic health educators
  • Nutritionists
  • Social workers
  • Respiratory therapists
  • Health educators
  • Exercise physiologists

Can a health coach prescribe medications?

No, our health coaches cannot prescribe medications or provide physician referrals. 

Will a health coach decide my goals?

Our health coaches work with you to help identify your wellness needs. You ultimately decide your goals. Our health coaches will provide you with the tools and resources you need to succeed. 

Does a health coach have access to my personal medical records?

Health coaches do not have access to your medical records or health information. However, it is recommended that you share any health assessment results with your health coach so that he or she can help you create the most effective wellness plan possible.
