Understanding Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Date:
August 01, 2022

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders. ADHD is usually diagnosed in children and often lasts into adulthood. All children have trouble focusing or behaving at one time or another, especially over the past year with disruptions to typical routines, school, and social events. But children with ADHD have persistent problems with attention and/or hyperactivity and do not just grow out of these behaviors. The symptoms continue and cause difficulty in school, at home, and socially with others.

A child with ADHD might:

  • Daydream frequently
  • Seem to forget or lose things often
  • Squirm or fidget when trying to sit still
  • Talk too much, even when inappropriate
  • Make mistakes that seem careless, or take unnecessary risks
  • Have general difficulty getting along with others

If you notice your child has some of these symptoms, please discuss this with their doctor. Your child may be referred to a specialist for evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment to help the symptoms if necessary.

In most cases, ADHD is best treated with a combination of medication and behavior therapy. If medication is prescribed for your child, it is important to have a follow-up appointment within the first 30 days, either in person or through telehealth, so the provider can evaluate the effectiveness of the medication, assess for side effects, and make medication adjustments if needed.
