Substance Use Disorder Awareness

Date:
June 01, 2022

About 1 in 15 Americans are living with a substance use disorder, and rates of alcohol and other drug use have increased in 2020 and 2021.

During times of increased stress, people are more likely to make decisions that negatively impact their health and may turn to substance use to in an attempt to cope. Since the pandemic began, recent studies have shown that 13% of people started using or increased their use of drugs, and 60% of people increased their alcohol consumption.

Part of substance use awareness is knowing when its time to reach out for help. The simple screening below can assist with this:

  • Have you ever felt that you ought to cut down on your drinking or drug use?
  • Have people annoyed you by criticizing your drinking or drug use?
  • Have you ever felt bad or guilty about your drinking or drug use?
  • Have you ever had a drink or used drugs first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or get rid of a hangover?

If the answer to any of these questions is “yes”, please reach out for assistance. Substance use disorders need to be treated, not hidden, and confidential help is available.
