Statement from BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York
Re: Medicaid Managed Care and Child Health Plus
“In mid-July 2014, BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York notified the New York State Department of Health (DOH), as well as key internal and external stakeholders of the company’s decision to discontinue administering state sponsored products in six Western New York counties (Erie, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Orleans, Wyoming, and Allegany), serving 53,000 members.
This difficult decision was made in spite of significant efforts to address chronic underfunding of these programs by New York state.
After the company’s public announcement, BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York was approached by an entity who provides coverage to individuals and families in government programs.
We are actively engaged in discussions with this entity around a strategic alliance to support and administer our state sponsored programs and as such, have provided the DOH with a formal suspension of our previously announced exit plan.
Our BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York Medicaid Managed Care and Child Health Plus members do NOT need to switch health plans, nor make any changes at this time to their health care plans including their respective physicians.
Additional information and updates will be provided to our state sponsored members and all other critical stakeholders in a compliant and timely manner, subject to further developments.
Our members with any questions can always contact Customer Service at 1-866-231-0847.
BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York has a 78 year history in the region and remains committed to providing all our state sponsored members access to the highest quality health care by joining with a recognized industry partner.”
