THREE AMHERST COMPANIES LOSE NEARLY 4,000 LBS. IN BLUECROSS BLUESHIELD AND AMHERST CHAMBER'S LOSE TO WIN CONTEST

Over 600 employees from Tops Markets, AAA of Central & Western New York and Superior Group collectively lost nearly 4,000 pounds in BlueCross BlueShield’s 2nd Annual Lose to Win Competition, a weight-loss program for members of the Amherst Chamber of Commerce.

Six hundred thirty two employees from the three member firms of BCBS and the Amherst Chamber participated in the program and lost a collective 3,966 lbs. in 12 weeks. Participants lost an average of 6.3 lbs; an impressive feat with the final weigh-in taking place the week after Thanksgiving.

For the second consecutive year, Tops “won” the friendly competition by losing a combined 3.31% of their body weight. Leading the way again for Tops was a team of employees named “Thin It to Win It”, who lost a stunning 29.4 lbs. per person. BCBS and the Amherst Chamber presented Tops with the Lose to Win Cup and a $1,000 from the Amherst Chamber to the winning team.

Lose to Win is a group weight-loss program which was initially piloted by BCBS for its’ own employees. Following a successful first year, the region’s largest health plan elected to offer this program as a benefit to member employer firms.  The health insurer has now expanded the program for 10 additional member firms that chose to compete internally.

“This unique program creates a team approach to healthy eating and weight loss, taking the pressure of losing weight off an individual,” said Gretchen Fierle, Senior Vice President, Marketing and Communications, BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York.  “The results are impressive and have created a demand at other employer firms.”

“We have been impressed at the level of participation and the results for our members,” said Colleen DiPirro, President of the Amherst Chamber.
