February is American Heart Month


February is American Heart Month. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. Cholesterol and blood pressure are the most controllable risk factors for heart disease, so it's important to have your doctor check your cholesterol levels and blood pressure. 

The following can help reduce your risk of heart disease: 

  • Eat a healthy balanced diet
  • Exercise daily
  • Reduce stress
  • Be tobacco-free
  • Know your numbers: Blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood glucose
  • Maintain a healthy weight
If you are having a heart attack, early detection of symptoms is critical for survivial. Call 911 if you or someone else is experiencing the following: 
  • Chest discomfort
  • Pain in the back, neck, jaw, upper stomach, or one or both arms
  • Shortness of breath
  • Cold sweat
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Lightheadedness
