BlueShield Provides 5 Simple Tips to Help Your Resolution Stick

It’s that time of the year again, as individuals tear down decorations and finish the last remains of the holiday ham, many will shift their focus to New Year’s resolutions. BlueShield of Northeastern New York is providing five simple tips to help this year’s resolutions stick. 

“Making a commitment to a New Year’s resolution is a step in the right direction toward a healthier lifestyle,” said Kelly Hahl, Health & Wellness Programs Manager, BlueShield of Northeastern New York. “We encourage individuals to take that first step and commitment because we know healthy changes everything.”  

However, it is important to remember that the New Year doesn’t have to serve as an impetus for a complete overhaul. Many times, individuals set themselves up for failure just by simply setting the bar too high. 

“New Year’s resolutions don’t have to be revolutions,” Hahl said. “By making your resolutions realistic, there is a greater chance for success. Small simple changes can make a very big difference.” 

Here are five tips to help keep your New Year’s resolution stick:

  1. Keep it Simple. Make resolutions that you know you can keep. Remember that Rome wasn’t built in a day so select realistic goals. Trying to lose fifty pounds by Valentine’s Day is probably not very realistic. Instead, break your resolution into smaller tasks such as losing one to two pounds a week.
  2. Make it Public. Declaring your New Year’s resolutions increases your odds for success. Something as simple as a Facebook post can really put a stake in the ground. The more people that know about your resolution the more support you have. Having friends and family to share your experience with allows you to stay focused and not make any rash, spur of the moment decisions.
  3. Take it one step at a time. Chances are you will be taking on a deep rooted issue. Change is a long term process; success will not and should not – happen overnight. 
  4. Stay Positive. There is always going to be a few bumps in the road on your journey to a healthier lifestyle. Making positive health changes takes a lot of effort, but that effort will always be worth it in the end. If you make a mistake, it is important to revisit your goal and get back on track. 
  5. Reward yourself. Having a light at the end of the tunnel helps you get through moments of tribulation. Small gifts that don’t jeopardize the progress you’ve made will make the journey more enjoyable. By gifting yourself, you’ll stay motivated by breaking your resolution down into smaller stepping stones.
