World Kidney Day is March 9.
The purpose of this day is to raise awareness of chronic kidney disease (CKD), the ninth leading cause of death in the United States.
Why it's important to keep your kidneys healthy
In addition to removing waste and fluid from your body, your kidneys perform these other important jobs:
- Regulate levels of water and minerals in your blood such as sodium, potassium, phosphorus, and calcium
- Remove drugs and toxins introduced in your body
- Release hormones into your blood to help your body regulate blood pressure, make red blood cells, and keep bones strong.
Chronic Kidney Disease prevention and keeping your kidneys healthy
CKD is often the result of uncontrolled diabetes and high blood pressure - risk factors that are manageable with lifestyle changes. To keep your kidneys healthy, exercise regularly, eat a low-salt diet, maintain a healthy weight, don't smoke, and if you drink, do so moderately. Get your blood pressure and fasting glucose checked regularly, along with your annual physical. Talk to your doctor about how to monitor and control your blood pressure and diabetes (if applicable).
Early detection is important
Kidney disease develops slowly and symptoms usually appear at a late stage when kidney failure has already begun, which can cause a need for dialysis. You could be at risk if you have high blood pressure, diabetes, or a family history of kidney disease. If you are at risk, a routine test of urine, blood, and blood pressure can detect early signs of kidney problems. Talk to your doctor about your risk and screening tests.
